We have a variety of roles to match different interests and abilities, including:

• Food Sorting: Organizing and checking donated items.
• Packing Boxes: Assembling food boxes for families and seniors.
• Client Services: Assisting visitors during food distribution hours.
• Delivery Help: Transporting food to senior living facilities or homebound individuals.
• Warehouse Support: Helping with stocking, organizing, and light cleanup.
Board Member: Providing leadership, guidance, and support for the organization’s mission and goals.

While regular volunteers are incredibly helpful, we understand that not everyone has a predictable schedule. You can choose to volunteer weekly, monthly, or even just occasionally—we’ll work with you to find a time that fits.

Board Member Responsibilities:

The board of directors is a group of volunteers that, as a whole, has the overall responsibility for governing Central Kitsap Food Bank. Members of the board are ethically, legally and fiscally responsible – collectively and individually – for all activities of CKFB.

Board members are expected to attend regularly scheduled board meetings and serve on at least one of the following standing board committees: executive, finance, fundraising, community engagement or governance. Terms are three years in length and members may serve up to two consecutive terms of service before leaving the board for at least one year.

Requirements for Board Service:

  • Have a passion to alleviate food insecurity in the Western Washington region.
  • Willingness to participate in CKFB fundraising activities and make a meaningful annual financial contribution to the organization.
  • Specific experience and/or knowledge in at least one of these areas: resource

development/fundraising, financial management, philanthropy/fundraising, communications, human resources, strategic planning, marketing, storytelling.

  • Willingness to represent the organization to the public.
  • Ability to serve an average of two to four hours per month of service time to the Board and CKFB.
  • Ability to work respectfully, cooperatively, and collaboratively with others; including diverse groups of people.
  • Sense of humor.

Key Areas of Board Member Responsibilities as a Whole:

Resource Development and Fundraising

  • Ensuring adequate resources to achieve the organization’s mission and implement the organization’s programs and projects.
  • Participating in fundraising activities based on the individual’s skills and background.


Fiscal Oversight

  • Ensuring strong fiduciary oversight including the financial accountability of the organization and that appropriate policies are in place.
  • Overseeing an ongoing process of budget development, approval and review.
  • Effectively managing all organizational assets; including investments, reserve funds and grant awards.


Strategic Planning

  • Defining and reviewing the organization’s mission, vision, values, and goals on an annual basis and understand CKFB’s collective purpose as an asset in the Kitsap community.
  • Planning for the organization’s future on a long-term basis.
  • Evaluating the organization’s performance at each board meeting.


Public Relations

  • Ensuring that the organization’s services appropriately address our constituents’ needs.
  • Promoting the organization to the general public, including serving as an ambassador of the organization whenever appropriate.
  • Promoting cooperative action with other community institutions; including activities and occasions when the organization should take part in joint fundraising or other collaborative ventures.


Human Resources

  • Selecting, evaluating and supporting the performance of and, if necessary, terminating, the Executive Director.
  • Enhancing board membership; including recruiting and orienting new board members, training, evaluating and recognizing existing board members, and providing board members with opportunities to grow and develop as leaders.
  • Developing and reviewing personnel policies, including setting policy regarding salaries, benefits and grievance procedures.
  • Encouraging volunteer involvement, which includes setting policy regarding how the organization utilizes, recognizes and honors its volunteers.
  • Assessing the board’s performance as a whole as well as each individual member’s performance as a governing body of CKFB.


Operations

  • Ensuring that the organization’s administrative systems and infrastructure are adequate and appropriate.
  • Ensuring that the board’s operations are adequate and appropriate.
  • Ensuring that the organization, its board and its staff meet all applicable legal and ethical requirements that abides by CKFB’s Code of Ethics.
  • Approving and monitoring of CKFB programs and services to ensure they move the mission forward in a meaningful manner.

Each Individual Board Member is expected to:

  • Know CKFB’s mission, vision, values, policies, programs, and needs as well as understand its collective purpose.
  • Faithfully read and understand CKFB’s financial statements and board materials in advance of meetings.
  • Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization.
  • Fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for the organization to advance its mission.
  • Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to achieve the organization’s mission.
  • Give a meaningful personal financial donation.
  • Help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing, and influence public policy.
  • Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings.
  • Participate fully in one or more committees or taskforces.
  • Engage in learning opportunities to better understand the community we serve.
  • Respect the experiences of all who bring their voices and lived experiences into the board room and to the organization.
  • Uphold the legal duties and laws regarding nonprofit governance.
  • Follow CKFB’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions.
  • Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings.
  • Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization.

CURBSIDE PICKUP

We offer curbside pickup for existing customers who prefer a more convenient way to receive their groceries. This service is especially helpful for those with mobility challenges, health concerns, or tight schedules—no need to leave your car, we’ll bring your groceries right to you.

To use curbside pickup, you MUST call ahead to schedule by 9:00–9:30 AM on the day you plan to come in. Once scheduled, just pull into the parking lot and give us a call—we’ll take care of the rest.

In some cases, online grocery ordering may be available, depending on staff and volunteer capacity. This option is evaluated on a base-by-base basis and may be paused or cancelled at any time. If approved, orders must be placed by 10:00 PM the night before pickup. Please speak with staff before placing your order and again prior to pickup to confirm that your order is ready.
